Mayor Garcetti Taps San Pedro’s Ralph Terrazas as L.A.’s Next Fire Chief

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced today he has selected veteran firefighter Ralph M. Terrazas to permanently fill the vacancy in the Los Angeles Fire Department’s top post.

Terrazas is a familiar face to the Harbor Area, as he was raised in Wilmington and currently resides in San Pedro. He will be the first Latino appointed as fire chief in the department’s history, which was formally established in 1920.

Terrazas, who has more than 30 years of experience, will replace former Fire Chief Brian Cummings who retired in October. Acting Fire Chief James G. Featherstone temporarily filled in for Cummings while Garcetti searched for a permanent successor.
Terrazas will oversee one of the largest fire departments in the U.S., with more than 3,000 firefighters.

In a statement released today, City Councilman Joe Buscaino commended the mayor’s decision and said, “I would like to congratulate Ralph Terrazas, on being appointed the next Chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department by Mayor Eric Garcetti. His roots run deep in the 15th Council District… I applaud Mayor Garcetti’s selection and am confident Terrazas is the right choice to implement much needed reforms to the Los Angeles Fire Department.”
