San Pedro Shred Returns Saturday

This Saturday, hundreds of skateboarders will descend on a hilly stretch of Gaffey Street between 32nd Street and Paseo del Mar for the second annual San Pedro Shred Festival of Skate.

The free event is sanctioned by the City of Los Angeles and offers a range of downhill, street and transition courses for skaters of all ages as well as professional demonstrations and instruction. There will also be food trucks, giveaways and live bands, including Mike Watt and the Missingmen.

The San Pedro Shred was created last year in response to the deaths of two youths who succumbed to injuries sustained while downhill skateboarding in San Pedro. All event participants are required to sign waivers and wear helmets and slide gloves on the downhill courses, and riders under 18 must wear helmets and pads on the street course. Both skate board inspectors and paramedics are on hand to ensure safety.

“This festival brings together our skating community in a safe environment that is satisfying for all participants,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino.

The event comes as the construction of the Peck Park Skate Park nears completion. The $800,000, 7,600-square-foot skate park is expected to open in July and will have offerings for skateboarders of all levels.
