San Pedro Mourns Sudden Passing of Restauranteur Bob Trusela

San Pedrans were shocked and saddened this morning to learn of the passing of restaurateur Bob Trusela, who recently opened Otto Trattoria on Sixth Street.

Trusela, 57, died of natural causes last night at his home in San Pedro.

Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, a close friend of Trusela’s, shared the news this morning on Facebook.

“You will be sorely missed by everyone in our community Bob,” he wrote. “Rest In Peace.”

Known for his welcoming smile and savory homemade Sicilian cuisine, Trusela began working in restaurants at 13, going on to manage Long Beach’s The Sky Room, the Madison and L’Opera among other four- and five-star restaurants.

A merchant marine who studied medicine and architecture, Trusela met his wife Josephine while working at former San Pedro eatery Avanti and they married in 1993. They opened award-winning Western Avenue restaurant Trusela’s in 2009.

Just a few months ago, Trusela opened Otto Trattoria in the former Papadakis Taverna space on the corner of Sixth and Centre Streets in downtown San Pedro. The restaurant recently hosted a meet and greet with new LAPD Harbor Division Capt. Gerald Woodyard.

Trusela is survived by his wife Josephine, sons Bobby, Louis, Tony and Domenic, and daughter Isabella.
