San Pedro Marks Memorial Day
Big crowds turned out for ceremonies observing Memorial Day in San Pedro last Monday. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Congresswoman Janice Hahn and Councilman Joe Buscaino gave remarks at a ceremony aboard the USS Iowa, which put on a host of family-friendly activities. Active duty military and veterans were also offered free tours of the battleship.
Green Hills Memorial Park hosted its annual Memorial Day Service featuring keynote speaker and Purple Heart Medal recipient Sgt. Daniel Rodriguez, flyovers, the release of 100 doves and a musical performance by country singer Matt Rogers.
Friday Night Quake
San Pedrans were jolted by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake on Friday night. The shallow quake occurred just before 8 p.m. 10 miles away from San Pedro, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Elks Lodge Arson Suspect’s Arraignment Postponed
An arraignment for 79-year-old San Pedro resident Nick Pecarich, who is charged with starting the fire that destroyed much of the San Pedro Elks Lodge on April 15, was postponed again last week. A judge granted Pecarich’s attorney’s request to postpone the arraignment because of new video evidence he had yet to review. Pecarich will next appear in court on June 18.
