Relay for Life Returns this Weekend

This weekend, San Pedro High School’s Pirate Stadium will once again host one of the largest annual fundraising events in San Pedro: Relay for Life.

This year’s 49 teams have already raised nearly $111,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Now in its ninth year, the event kicks off at 10 a.m. this Saturday, May 17, and ends at 9 a.m. the following morning.

“Relay for Life in San Pedro is actually one of the largest relays in the area, not just in terms of money raised, but in terms of the number of people who come out for it,” says Omar El Adli, who is co-chairing this year’s event with Tina Garcia. “We get to use the track for 24 hours and there’s always a huge turn out.”

El Adli, who personally lost one of his best friends to cancer, has been participating in San Pedro’s Relay since its early years.

In addition to the 24-hour walk around the Sam Domancich Track — including the survivor’s lap and moving luminaria ceremony — organizers are putting together a new prevention program for local youth called Relay Recess.

“We know that two-thirds of cancer is caused by lifestyle choices and is therefore preventable, so even though the program might not raise money for the American Cancer Society, it’s important to educate our youth about prevention,” El Adli said. He’s currently organizing Relay Recess events for several local elementary schools as well as the Wilmington Boys and Girls Club.

“The program will vary by school, but ideally it will be a week-long event with each day focusing on a different area like nutrition or smoking prevention,” he said. “Hopefully the information they learn will stay for them or the rest of their lives.”
