Elks Lodge Holds First Post-Fire Meeting

Six days after much of the San Pedro Elks Lodge was destroyed in a fire authorities have deemed arson, the lodge held its first regular meeting since the fire in its parking lot on Monday, April 21. Congresswoman Janice Hahn and Elks leadership spoke to a crowd of several hundred lodge members who turned out for the meeting, where Exalted Ruler Jose Chavez announced that the Dalmatian-American Club offered its venue free of charge for the lodge to relocate operations and gatherings. He also announced that the lower floor of the lodge is largely intact. Arson investigators have yet to make an arrest in the case.

Mutilated Pelican Brought to International Bird Rescue

A mutilated pelican found in Long Beach was brought to the International Bird Rescue in San Pedro last week, where it underwent surgery on Sunday. Authorities announced a $7,500 award for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever stabbed and slashed the pelican’s throat.

Batting Cage, Golf Area Coming to Daniel’s Field 

Last Tuesday, a groundbreaking ceremony at the future multipurpose recreation area at Daniel’s Field was put on by Councilman Joe Buscaino’s office, the Department of Recreation and Parks and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor. The field will be getting a batting cage, golf-driving range cages, and a new picnic area that will open this summer.

Iconic Point Fermin Ficus Tree Uprooted

One of Point Fermin Park’s iconic large ficus trees, shaped by decades of ocean winds, was uprooted by strong winds over the weekend. The tree was one of many that surround the lighthouse.
