Photo Exhibit to Showcase San Pedrans and their Pets

Pedro People and Their Pets, which opens April 27 during Angels Gate Open Studios, will showcase moments in time of San Pedro residents and their beloved pets.

There’s a new photo exhibit opening at Angels Gate Cultural Center in a few weeks, and San Pedrans — both two- and four-legged — are invited to be a part of it.

Pedro People and Their Pets, which opens April 27 during Angels Gate Open Studios, will showcase moments in time of San Pedro residents and their beloved pets.

“A pet’s life is but a fraction of what our lifespan is, so take photos of them while you can, you’ll forever cherish them,” says Valerie Smith-Griffin, who has been photographing people with their pets for more than 20 years. It’s something she started doing for homeless people who might not have the resources to capture their pets on film. “I’ve run across many people throughout he years that I’ve been doing this that didn’t take picture of their pets and regretted it.”

In addition to Smith-Griffin’s own photos, the show will display entries from San Pedro residents. They must be submitted by April 17 in order to be displayed on opening day, but more photos will be added as they come in.

“Sometimes I’ve been drawn to a particular pet and I give its owner their picture and the pet dies shortly after,” Smith-Griffin says. “Often times that has happened and it gives me satisfaction knowing at least I was able to capture a short moment in time that means so much to them.”

If you’d like to contribute to the exhibit, send your photos to

“We want an upbeat exhibit,” Smith-Griffin says. “It should be very creative and very fun.”
