USS Iowa Battleship to Celebrate 71st Birthday Saturday

Saturday will mark the USS Iowa Battleship’s 71st birthday, and the celebration will take place both dockside and aboard the battleship with the official unveiling of the Plankowner Tribute Wall.

The tribute wall will pay homage to those donors that made it possible for the Iowa to not only move to San Pedro, but be refurbished and opened as a tourist attraction in July of 2012.

The celebration starts at 10 a.m., and will also pay tribute to the birthday of George Washington, who was born Feb. 22, 1732.

According to a press release, guests will include U.S. Representative Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro), Vietnam and U.S. Navy veteran William Stephens and Pacific Battleship Center president Jonathan Williams.

Ship tour admissions have been reduced on both Saturday and Sunday for plankowners, who will be able to tour the ship for free, in honor of the celebration.

The mission of the Pacific Battleship Center is to “celebrate the American spirit through the preservation and interpretation of the Battleship Iowa, to educate the public on the accomplishments and sacrifices of American patriots, and to engage our guests in unique and exciting ways that bring the ship to life by connecting the past with the future.”
