Weekly News Roundup – Feb. 10, 2014

Buscaino Proposes $10 Million Sidewalk Repair Plan, Asks for Public Input

Councilman Joe Buscaino advanced a plan in the city council’s public works committee last week to spend $10 million on badly-needed sidewalk repairs (it would cost an estimated $1.5 billion to fix all 4,600 miles of broken sidewalks throughout the city). If passed by the city council, the funding will be split three ways, going to sidewalks that have been subject to claims and lawsuits, to sidewalks along “iconic” streets with heavy foot-traffic, and finally to areas in all 15 council districts. Buscaino also added a public poll on his website asking voters if they’d like to see sidewalks included in a proposed $3 billion street repair bond.

Garcetti Responds to Street Racers Petitioning for Terminal Island Raceway

The office of Mayor Eric Garcetti responded last week to an online petition started by the National and International Brotherhood of Street Racers calling for the return of a legal amateur raceway on Terminal Island.

“Mayor Garcetti agrees illegal street racing is dangerous, and there’s a need for more positive alternatives,” a representative told the Beacon in a statement. “Our office is working with stakeholders to consider possible solutions. But the reality is a drag racing track is a difficult project to bring to fruition.”
