Man Who Jumped to His Death off Vincent Thomas Bridge ID’d

The man who jumped to his death Wednesday afternoon from the Vincent Thomas Bridge was identified as a 53-year-old Fullerton man.

Mark Shindo was pronounced dead at 2:03 p.m. after jumping from the bridge and landing on a container terminal dock, Ed Winter, assistant chief at the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office said.

Initial reports indicated that Shindo was leaving the San Pedro-area around 1:30 p.m., when he drove onto the Vincent Thomas Bridge, parked and eventually jumped off the eastbound side of the bridge landing on a shipping container.

Shindo’s abandoned vehicle was later struck by an oncoming vehicle — the driver of that vehicle suffered minor injuries, Port of Los Angeles Police officials said.

The Vincent Thomas Bridge is the same bridge that saw Tony Scott, director of Top Gun, among many others, jumped to his death in August of 2012.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Port of Los Angeles police at 310-732-3500.
