A 36-year-old who is being called a “hero,” drowned Saturday trying to rescue a man and a boy who had been swept off the Cabrillo Beach breakwater by a large wave.

Man Dies in Breakwater Rescue A 36-year-old Compton man died Saturday morning after he rescued a teen who was swept by a wave along with a 49-year-old man over the breakwater near Cabrillo Beach. Authorities arrived at the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m., when all three were back on the breakwater. Francisco “Pancho” Melendez, who was pulled from the water by another bystander, was transported to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
