Pearl Harbor Vets Honored on USS Iowa
Two veterans who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor were honored at a ceremony on the USS Iowa on Saturday, the 72nd anniversary of the “Day of Infamy.” The ceremony also featured speakers, a fireboat salute and the release of a wreath into the harbor honoring lives lost in the attack.
Weekend Ends with 5-Hour Standoff, Search Puts Schools on Lockdown
After a five-hour-long standoff with a Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team, a San Pedro man suspected of assault with a deadly weapon surrendered to police just before 3 a.m. this morning. Helicopters circled the corner of 22nd and Leland Streets for several hours, where some residents were evacuated in case of possible crossfire.
Earlier in the week on Wednesday, multiple schools were put on lockdown for several hours when sheriff’s deputies searched for a handcuffed suspect who fled authorities after being detained on suspicion of allegedly snatching a woman’s purse in the parking lot of Top Valu market. The suspect was eventually found hiding in a trash can in an alley behind Tenth Street.
San Pedrans Turn Out for Toy Drives
Councilman Joe Buscaino hosted a free night at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach on Tuesday offering free admission to anyone who brought a new, unwrapped toy that will go to an underprivileged child in the Fifteenth Council District.
The following morning, the Warner Grand Theatre was one of five drop-off locations for a city-wide toy drive held by HOT 92.3 FM, the LAPD, the Pursuit of Excellence Foundation, the Will and Jada Pinkett Smith Foundation and Code 3 News San Pedro.
Boys and Girls Club Showcases Arts Academy
The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor celebrated the culmination of the first year of its Arts Academy with a showcase of student art and performances at the Warner Grand Theatre on Dec. 4. A gallery show displayed the work of local youth in game design, 3D modeling, animation and film production, and was followed by music and dance performances at the Warner Grand. Students enrolled in the academy attend classes on Saturdays with specialized instruction.
A Week of Wintery Festivities
San Pedro was abuzz with holiday festivities last week. On the heels of the 33rd Spirit of San Pedro Holiday Parade, Councilman Joe Buscaino’s office hosted a holiday tree lighting ceremony on First Thursday that featured a snow slide, carolers, Santa Claus and the opening of the 25-year time capsule. The next night, Weymouth Corners was transformed in Candy Cane Lane. On Saturday, a TubaChristmas performance kicked off the 51st Los Angeles Harbor Holiday Afloat Parade.
