Man Dies in Breakwater Rescue
A 36-year-old Compton man died Saturday morning after he rescued a teen who was swept by a wave along with a 49-year-old man over the breakwater near Cabrillo Beach.
Authorities arrived at the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m., when all three were back on the breakwater. Francisco “Pancho” Melendez, who was pulled from the water by another bystander, was transported to Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Melendez leaves behind a wife and six children.
Motorcyclist Killed in Crash
A 43-year-old San Pedro man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a pole near the end of the southbound 110 Freeway on Wednesday morning.
Leonard Fell, who leaves behind a 4-year-old son, lost control of his motorcycle just before the crash around 10:30 a.m. and was later pronounced dead at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
Downtown San Pedro Marks 33rd Holiday Parade
Hundreds of spectators lined the streets of downtown San Pedro on Saturday for the 33rd Annual Spirit of San Pedro Holiday Parade.
Hosted by the San Pedro Chamber of Commerce and the Historic Downtown Waterfront District, this year’s parade honored Living Treasures Florence Collins, Matty Domancich, Harry Hall, Goldeen Kaloper, and Muriel Olguin as community grand marshals. Eastview Little League was the sports grand marshal and San Pedro’s Boy Scout packs were the youth grand marshal. Santa Claus rode in PBID’s red trolley.
Unearthed Time Capsule to be Opened Thursday
A crew unearthed a time capsule last week that was buried in Peppertree Plaza outside of the Municipal Building in 1989 and will be opened this Thursday during Councilman Joe Buscaino’s Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The 25-year time capsule was one of two buried as part of San Pedro’s centennial celebration and was packed with items ranging from clothing, to a parking meter, to a telephone. The other capsule will be opened in 2088.
The event at Peppertree Plaza on Thursday starts at 3 p.m. and will feature real snow, performances by carolers and the Dana Middle School Marching Band, food trucks and more.
