San Pedro Gets Ready for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

Black Friday isn’t just for big box stores, and shopping local shouldn’t be relegated to just Small Business Saturday (or just one part of town).

For those of us who’d rather pass on the mall’s chaotic crowds and support the local economy, our town of mom-and-pop shops has a lot to offer.

A number of San Pedro businesses are having after-Thanksgiving sales, like Captain’s Treasure Chest on Western Avenue, which has been having a Black Friday sale for 25 years.

Mandyz Boutique in Weymouth Corners will offer 15 to 30 percent sales on items throughout the store for its after-Thanksgiving sale, including $10 off scarves, caps, beanies, rings and earrings on Friday.

Owner Mona Khalbourji says this is the third year the store is having a Black Friday sale.

“We have better turnouts every year and we really get the word out on Facebook and Instagram, so hopefully it’ll be a good year this year.”

The 4th Basement on Western Avenue is having a special 20 percent off sale on Black Friday as well as 50 percent off sandals and additional sales on clearance items.

“If you shop small and support local businesses, it’s not as crowded,” says sales associate Wilhelmina Webber. “There aren’t that many people and it’s going to be easier to get through instead of pushing people around and waiting in line.”

Downtown at Urban Feet, owner Otto Henke says although he hasn’t had after-Thanksgiving sales, he thinks San Pedrans are loyal to local businesses and definitely sees more foot traffic this time of year.

“We have sales all the time and offer an everyday low-price,” he says. “We have loyal customers and I think all of the businesses really try to stick together in San Pedro.”

Down at Crafted, vendors are getting ready for Councilman Joe Buscaino’s second annual Cash Mob on Small Business Saturday. The day will feature Mr. and Mrs. Claus, the second of its Twelve Days of Craftsmas workshops, live music and dance, brewery tastings and food trucks.
