L.A. Phil Quartet Performs at SP International Art Exhibit

A LA Philharmonic string quartet performs at the opening exhibit of the Croatian Cultural Center's Art Without Boundaries on Nov. 23.

More than 150 people, including several diplomats, attended the opening of an international art exhibit at the Croatian Cultural Center on Saturday, which included a Los Angeles Philharmonic string quartet performance.

Art Without Boundaries, a collaboration between the Center and consulates of the greater Los Angeles area, showcases the works of 19 artists from 16 countries, ranging from paintings, to photographs, to woodwork. A closing reception will be open to the public this Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

San Pedro’s own Debbie Marr and Ingrid Dietrich are among featured artists, representing the United States and El Salvador, respectively. The exhibit also showcases artists from Russia, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Ireland, Wales, Croatia, Hungary, Germany, France, Mexico, Armenia, Iran and Bolivia.

“Art Without Boundaries serves as a central interchange for cultural diplomacy among the 97 international consulates within the greater Los Angeles area,” Center Marketing Director Bree-Ana Blazicevic told the audience. “It speaks about critical programming that is relevant, provocative and entertaining.”

A string quartet from the LA Philharmonic performed a 45-minute concert of music by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms before the artists were presented.

“This all started with the friendship of two countries: Croatia and Ecuador,” said Croatian Cultural Center President Maya Bristow, who organized the event. The night kicked off a series of exhibits of the individual artists that will take place next year.

In attendance was Eddie Bedon Orbe, consul general of Ecuador, Josip Buljevic, consul general of Croatia, and Fernando Lazcano Dunn, former consul of Bolivia.

Representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Janice Hahn and State Senator Roderick Wright presented certificates to the consuls, Bristow, Center Vice President Frane Jerkovic, and members of the LA Philharmonic: Camille Avellano, Barry Gold, Dana Hansen and Aroussiak Baltaian.

“The best thing about Los Angeles is all the different cultures,” said Majella Milne, of Ireland, whose pastel of a child is featured in the exhibit. “What a wonderful platform it is here tonight where we can mingle and get to know one another and understand one other at least a little bit more.”
